Hair tattoos look real (like shaved hair) when undertaken by a highly skilled SMP specialist. They can be used to imitate a closely cropped scalp, fill patches in for alopecia clients or used as a density treatment for diffuse thinning hair. They can also be used to camouflage hair transplant scars.

Unlike hair transplants, this process uses a tattoo gun. Pigment is placed into the balding scalp and amongst the surrounding hair, with the tiny ink dots imitating natural tiny hair follicles. The result gives a scalp with a natural-looking appearance, people will never know you’ve had it done. 

The lifespan of a hair tattoo can range anywhere from two to five years, and depends on factors such as the aftercare, the type of ink used and direct exposure to sunlight. You may require a touch-up over time as the skin naturally exfoliates itself and may fade slightly. Having a touch-up will keep your SMP looking fresh and looking like new

This is a permanent hair loss solution but does require touch-ups every few years to keep it looking fresh. The treatment involves placing micro dots of pigment into the scalp to replicate the look of natural hair follicles. Permanent cosmetic pigments are used for SMP.

The practitioner’s process is typically pain-free and doesn’t hurt like a traditional inking, although, it can be slightly uncomfortable near the hairline. A traditional approach goes through 7 layers of skin whilst hair tattoos only go down 2 layers (dermis), which makes it less painful.

Yes, this treatment is totally safe and risk-free. The pigment is non-toxic and safe to use, so you should not have any negative side effects and the procedure should not be too uncomfortable or painful. We have never seen an adverse reaction on a client’s scalp due to having Scalp Micropigmentation.

This treatment is usually carried out over 3 visits and a full session for a Norwood 7 client usually takes 4-9 hours and depends on the size of the area. There are 2 weeks between visits 1 and 2, with a 3rd session taking place 3 weeks later.
